A synthetic grass surface for sports fields comprises (in order) an imitation grass mat which is sprinkled with quartz sand; a load-distributing layer, esp. of a non-woven fabric; a foundation layer comprising a mixt. of sand and a granular material in a predetermined ratio; and a substrate layer of sand. (claimed). Pref. the granular material is vitreous ash obtd. by fusing fly ash from coal fired power stations at 1600-1700 deg. C and granulating the prod. in water.
