PURPOSE:To reduce unburnt parts by feeding to a flowpath contiguous to pulverized coal flowpath combustion air of a temperature which is greater than that of combustion air fed to other flowpath. CONSTITUTION:A burner port 3 is divided from its center into a pulverized coal flowpath 11, a combustion gas flowpath 38, a secondary air flowpath 5 and a tertiary air flowpath 8, and a return combustion gas 35 is fed to the combustion gas flowpath. Upon this occasion, by passing the return combustion gas through a catalytic burner 13, the temperature thereof is raised, and the return combustion gas is fed to the burner port 3. The oxygen concentration within the return combustion gas is ordinarily as low as 2-10%. However, according to the catalytic combustion, it is possible to sufficiently perform a combustion reaction, and hence a region where the temperature is high and the oxygen concentration is low, that is, a reducing atmospheric region, can be created. Further, since the lowering of the oxygen concentration at the furnace outlet can be measured by said method, the efficiency of the burner can be increased.
