PURPOSE:To simplify the mechanism of a tool retaining device in an automatic tool exchanger by forcibly opening a ratchet under the effect of contacting and contacted parts and simplifying the assembly of the ratchet by the help of an elastic member. CONSTITUTION:At the forward end of the spindle 1 of a machine tool and the like is formed a taper-shape retaining hole 3 fit for the shank of a tool 2. When a draw bar 6 within a tool retaining device has been press pushed by a hydraulic cylinder mechanism not shown herein, a ratchet retainer 9 moves forward and a retaining part 15 opens by the effect of an elastic ring 18, when it has passed a stepped part 26. Then, a contact part 23 presses a contacted part 27, the retaining part 15 works to open and a ratchet 12 opens. In this state, to tool 2 is inserted in the retaining hole 3 and the hydraulic cylinder mechanism is made non-operative. Then, the draw bar 6 is pulled by a coil spring 8 and the ratchet 12 retreats via the ratchet retainer 9. When the retaining part 15 has come inside of the stepped part 26, the retaining part 15 comes to retain a pull stud 14 and draw the tool 2 for its coupling to the spindle 1.
