The process of manufacturing optical fibres for transmission in the medium infrared employs metal fluorides and chlorides obtained by the vapour-phase reaction, started at ambient temperature by UV radiation, between an organometallic compound and a fluorine or chlorine containing reactant. The apparatus for carrying out the process is also provided.
