PURPOSE:To prevent the deformation of a base by applying heat treatment after patterning is applied to a lower magnetic layer formed over the entire face of the base so as to prevent a large thermal stress onto the base. CONSTITUTION:Patterning is applied to the lower magnetic layer 2 covering the entire face of the base 1 and heat treatment is applied while the area is reduced in the production of a thin film magnetic head where the lower magnetic layer is formed onto the base by the thin film deposition method and a coil conductor, electrodes and an upper magnetic layer are formed on the upper side of the lower layer. Thus, the area of the lower magnetic layer adhered to the base is small, the thermal stress applied to the base is very less regardless of heat treatment and no deformation of the base is caused.
