A steady rest is proposed which is used for the self-centring mounting of workpieces in lathes. An infeed spindle (31) axially movable in the steady-rest housing, with supporting nut (32), is used for the uniform infeed of two vertical roller slides (15, 16) and one horizontal roller slide (17, 18). The infeed spindle (31) and supporting nut (32) act on the gear units (13, 14) via the horizontal slide (18) and feed the roller slides (15 to 17) via the toothed racks (19, 25). <IMAGE>
