PURPOSE:To obtain a novel copolymer having excellent elongation and impact strength compared with conventional cyanoaryl ether polymer, by reacting a dihalogenobenzonitrile with an alkali metal salt of hydroquinone and an alkali metal salt of a dihydric phenol, and treating the reaction product with water, etc. CONSTITUTION:The objective copolymer is obtained by reacting (A) a dihalogenobenzonitrile of formula I (X is halogen, preferably F or Cl) with (B) a hydroquinone alkali metal salt of formula II (M is alkali metal, preferably Na or K) and (C) a dihydric phenol alkali metal salt of formula III (Ar is group of formula IV, formula V, etc.) in the presence of a solvent (e.g. sulfolane), and treating the reaction product with water or an alcohol. The copolymer contains kmol of the recurring unit of formula VI and lmol of the recurring unit of formula VI (k and l are numbers satisfying the formula VIII) and has a reduced viscosity of >=0.3dl/g measured in p-chlorophenol at a concentration of 0.2g/dl at 60 deg.C.
