PURPOSE:To obtain a multi-color drawing reader which has a small number of recognition errors by extracting and recognizing independently the line excepting an exterior line and at the same time reading a drawing containing different color for each line to recognize patterns for each designated color. CONSTITUTION:When a multi-color drawing is supplied to a multi-color reader 11, the input data is turned into spot trains for each color by an image processor 2 and stored in a picture memory. Then the spot train data is analyzed by a main computer 3. In a normal processing mode, various types of lines are extracted according to the information on the stored colors. Then a character extracting process 5, an extracting process 6a for arrow marks, dimensional lines and auxiliary dimensional lines, an extracting process 8 for center line, an extracting process 12 for other lines and an extracting process 9 for exterior line are carried out sequentially. The recognition and registration are performed for each line. The exterior line is recognized and integrated with lines other than the exterior line in a recognition integrating process 13. Thus the exterior line is recognized and discriminated from the information on the dimensional lines, center line, etc. and the information on a relevant drawing is stored in a table. The result recognized finally is corrected in a conversational process 10 and delivered to an external display memory 4.
