Exhaust gases, for example originating from a diesel engine, are passed into the sump of a vessel (1). In the continuous course of the process, situated in this sump is a scrubbing liquid (5) which is principally composed of condensate from the exhaust gases. The exhaust gases are mixed with the scrubbing liquid and conveyed by means of air-lift pumps (18) into the upper region (2) of the vessel (1). There the mixture is distributed and flows through a packed column (11). As a result, the exhaust gas is purified and cooled. The condensate produced separates from the exhaust gas and flows back into the sump, whereas the cold, purified exhaust gas is withdrawn. A part of the condensate is collected above the packed column (11) and is circulated through a filtration apparatus (25) back into the sump. Excess scrubbing liquid escapes through a siphon from the sump. In this way, thermal energy can be recovered from the exhaust gas with good efficiency and the exhaust gas can be substantially purified without any moving parts of an apparatus being necessary. <IMAGE> |
