PURPOSE:To obtain an enlarged or reduced picture of high quality by changing the density levels of original picture elements for N pieces of divided areas corresponding to the original picture element respectively with the prescribed operation and selecting these level in response to the position of conversion. CONSTITUTION:A read/write control part 3 delivers the read address of an original picture to a picture memory and stores the picture data corresponding to said address to a latch part 11. While the horizontal and vertical distance arithmetic parts 14 and 15 calculate the positions of the converted picture elements against the original picture elements based on the horizontal vertical clocks delivered from a timing signal generating circuit 12. Based on the results of said calculation, a density arithmetic part 16 calculates the data after enlargement and reduction according to the original picture element data given from the part 11 as well as the area setting values alpha and betarespectively. Then N pieces of density levels are set from plural pieces of picture data for the original picture to be processed. Then one of said density levels is selected according to the areas decided by the horizontal and vertical distance operations and the area setting value. Thus it is possible to obtain the picture data underwent the enlargement/reduction conversion with high picture quality and no disturbance.
