PURPOSE:To obtain a polycarbonate excellent in saponification stability and mechanical properties, by using a combination of a specified aromatic bishydroxy compound with an alicyclic bishydroxy compound as the bishydroxy compound component. CONSTITUTION:A bishydroxy compound component comprising an aromatic bishydroxy compound (A) comprising bisphenol A and o,o,o',o'-tetraalkyl- substituted bisphenol A and 0.1-40mol%, based on component A, alicyclic bishydroxy compound (B) (e.g., 1,3-cyclohexanediol or 1,4-cyclohexanediol) is prepared. The purpose polycarbonate is obtained by melt-reacting this bishydroxy compound component with a carbonate (e.g., diphenyl carbonate). The obtained polycarbonate can be suitably used as a material for automobile parts, electronic parts, etc.
