PURPOSE:To produce the title compound useful as a monomer of heat-resistant polymer, etc., in high yield and purity, in a short time, by reacting 4,4'- dihalogenobenzophenone with m- or p-aminophenol under specific condition. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound can be produced by reacting 4,4'- dihalogenobenzophenone with m- or p-aminophenol in the aprotic polar solvent (e.g. 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazoline) in the presence of a solid basic alkali metal compound (e.g. potassium hydroxide) at 100-240 deg.C, preferably 120-200 deg.C. The amount of m- or p-aminophenol is >=2mol, preferably 2-3mol per 1mol of 4,4'-dihalogenobenzophenone.
