NEW MATERIAL:2,3-Dihydroxy-2,3, 5-trimethyl-6-(1-methyl-2-hydroxybutyl-)-4H- pyran-4-one of formula (= stegobiol). USE:Sex attractant for ginseng beetle. It is a viscous liquid effective to attract the male imago of ginseng beetle to a definite spot and to artificially disturb the normal copulation of the beetle. Useful for the investigation of the outbreak of the beetle by attracting and killing the vermin. The amount of insecticide can be decreased. Preferably, a tablet of a mixture of 1-30mg of the compound per 1g of a carrier composed of polypropyran and pulp is applied for 4-10 days during the active period of ginseng beetle. PREPARATION:The compound of formula can be produced by reacting 2,3- dihydro-2,3, 5-trimethyl-6-(1-methyl-2-oxobutyl)-4H-pyra-n-4-one (= stegobinone) with NaBH4 in an organic solvent such as ethyl ether at or below room temperature.
