PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful a raw material of surfactant, etc., economically in high quality, by reacting a hydrocarbon with SO2 and O2 under the irradiation of light in the absence of water under a specific reaction condition and neutralizing the reaction product with an alkali, thereby removing the unreacted component in high efficiency. CONSTITUTION:An alkanesulfonic acid salt can be produced by reacting a saturated hydrocarbon (preferably 8-24C n-paraffin) with sulfur dioxide and oxygen in a reaction system essntially free of water under light radiation, and neutralizing the obtained alkanesulfonic acid with an alkali. In the above process, the reaction liquid obtained by the reaction is deaerated, extracted with an aqueous solution of methyl alcohol or ethyl alcohol having an alcohol concentration of 20-80vol% and the extract is neutralized with an alkali (e.g. NaOH, Na2CO3, KOH, etc.).
