The pivoting blade cutters (4) on a straw cutting machine operate in the feed channel (1) of a loading carriage. The cutters (4) are of an approximate triangular shape, pivot about an axis (b) through their bottom (4a) and only move aside in the presence of foreign objects. Once they have moved aside their cutting action is reduced. The cutters (4) penetrate the channel from one side and act with components of the feeding mechanism. the components penetrate on the opposite side of the channel. A top apex (4c) leads the movement of the cutter through a guide grid (3) and a coplanar passage between two parallel plates (11) gives further guidance. The path taken by the cutter is controlled by a stud (14) in a curved slot (13), and retraction is resisted by a spring loaded cam (17 to 20) acting on a ramped (16b) and notched (16)a) edge. Alternatively the slot (13) may be inclined and the stud (14) able to move against a spring.
