PURPOSE:To obtain an electrochromic display element having superior color developing and vanishing characteristics by using a counter electrode obtd. by filling powder of a cyano-complex of a transition metal into the gaps in carbon fiber cloth. CONSTITUTION:A mixture of a cyano-complex of a transition metal with a binder and graphite is filled into the gaps in carbon fiber cloth by applying the mixture after kneading with a solvent. Iron hexacyanoferrate may be used as the cyano-complex. An electrodeposited film of iron hexacyanoferrate is formed as a display electrode 2 on the transparent and electrically conductive film 1b of a display electrode substrate 1. Iron hexacyanoferrate powder is kneaded with epoxy resin, graphite and 1,2-dimethoxyethane, and the kneaded material is applied to carbon fiber cloth and heated to produce a counter electrode 4. This counter electrode 4 is adhered to the transparent and electrically conductive film 3b of a counter electrode substrate 3 with an electrically conductive adhesive.
