NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R is alkyl or alkoxy). EXAMPLE:2-(trans-4-n-Propyl-cyclohexanoyloxy)-9,10-dihydrophenanthrene. USE:It exhibits excellent nematic liquid crystal nature at low temperature over a wide temperature range and is useful as a liquid crystal compound for a liquid crystal display element used at a relatively low temperature range. PREPARATION:The compound of formula IV (R1 is alkyl; X is halogen) can be produced by hydrogenating phthanthrene to 9,10-dihydrophenanthrene, nitrating and reducing the product, diazotizing and hydrolyzing the obtained compound, and reacting the resultant compound of formula II with 4-alkyl- substituted-cyclohexanoyl halide of formula III.
