A process for the simultaneous removal of SOx and NOx, in particular SO2 and NO, from exhaust gases of sulphur- and nitrogen-containing fuels is described. In this case, the exhaust gas is conducted into the lower part of a scrubber (7) in which, during its ascent to the gas outlet (8), it experiences multiple horizontal deflection. At the same time it is subjected to the action of an acid, which is sprayed via spray nozzles (32, 32', 32'') and oxidises the gases to be removed. The spraying of the oxidising acid is carried out in counter-current, cross-flow and co-current to the exhaust gas flow. The exhaust gas is conducted through a plurality of stages (27, 27', 27'') arranged successively in the gas flow direction, the acid being circulated in its own circulation in each stage. For this purpose a separate acid sump (31, 31', 31'') is provided in each stage. From the sump (24) of the scrubber, excess used acid is conducted away which is reprocessed and sprayed in again into the upper part of the scrubber via spray nozzles (30) as fresh acid. <IMAGE>
