PRODUCTION OF HIGHLY CONDUCTIVE CARBON BLACK

PURPOSE:To reduce energy required in production steps, by thermally decomposing acetylene gas with a mixed gas stream of an oxygen-contg. gas and steam, partially oxidizing the resulting carbon black with a hot oxygen-contg. gas and heat-treating it in a hydrogen-contg. gas under specified temp. conditions. CONSTITUTION:Acetylene gas or a mixture thereof with an unsaturated hydrocarbon (e.g. ethylene or propylene) is thermally decomposed continuously with a mixed gas stream of an oxygen-contg. gas and steam to obtain a carbon black substrate. The carbon black substrate is partially oxidized with a hot oxygen-contg. gas pref. at 500-800 deg.C. The partially oxidized carbon black is heat-treated in a hydrogen-contg. gas at 500 deg.C or above. The resulting carbon black contains only trace amounts of impurities and the particle size of primary particle thereof is 25nm or below.
