PURPOSE:To obtain an aromatic methylene resin essentially free from oxygen atom, having high compatibility to other resins like formaldehyde resin and having high thermal stability, by reacting an aromatic compound with formaldehyde in the presence of a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The objective aromatic methylene resin absolutely or essentially free from oxygen atom and having a structure composed of about 2-10 aromatic nuclei bonded together via methylene groups, by polymerizing an aromatic compound with trioxane which is the trimer of formaldehyde in the presence of a strongly acidic cation exchange resin catalyst. The reaction is carried out preferably at 70-90 deg.C for 2-7hr under normal pressure at a molar ratio of the aromatic compound/formaldehyde of 1-3 and the ratio of the aromatic compound to the total exchange capacity of the strongly acidic cation exchange resin of 1-3.
