PURPOSE:To take a size measurement speedily with high precision by using a photoelectric converter such as a solar battery as a power source for driving an electrostatic capacity type encoder, etc. CONSTITUTION:The main scale 1 has one jaw 4 at one end part and is equipped with the 1st electrode. This main scale 2 is provided with the other jaw 10 which is mounted slidably in lengthwise directions and pairs with said jaw 4. A slider 8 has the 2nd electrode provided opposite the 1st electrode. Then, the electrostatic capacity type encoder equipped with the 1st and the 2nd electrodes and a circuit means sends out an output corresponding to the relative movement distance between the main scale 2 and slider 8. A digital display device 34 displays digitally the output value of the electrostatic capacity type encoder. Then, the power source for driving the electrostatic capacity type encoder and digital display device 34 is constituted including photoelectric converters 36 fitted on plural surfaces of the slider 8 and a battery 38 where generated electric power is accumulated.
