PURPOSE:To reproduce slow motion or still pictures more vividly by not only supplying driving pulses to vertical and horizontal shift registers but also discharging the electric charge stored in all photodetectors in a part of a prescribed period through vertical and horizontal shift registers. CONSTITUTION:An exposure period 1V of one field is divided to periods T1 and T2, and the electric charge generated in photodetectors 1 in the first half period T1 is eliminated as an ineffective component, and the electric charge generated in photodetectors 1 in the latter period T2 is used as an image pickup output. At a time t4 when the period T1 is terminated, the ineffective electric charge generated in photodetectors 1 in the period T1 (from a time t0 to the time t4) is transferred to a vertical shift register 2. This ineffective electric charge is eliminated completely in the period T2. That is, clock pulses phiV11 and phiV12 whose number is equal to the number of vertical picture elements are generated during the period from a time t5 to a time t6 and clock pulses phiH11 and phiH12 whose number is equal to the number of all picture elements are given to a horizontal shift register 4 to discharge the ineffective electronic charge from an output terminal 6.
