PURPOSE:To improve operability of the manufacture of a piercing probe by forming a recess to a portion of the converting element material along the direction perpendicular to the long axis or the direction along the long axis of the material with the exception of a continuous portion towards the rear portion. CONSTITUTION:The material of the converting element 16 is first formed by burning a piezoelectric material 15 hard in a thin elongate strip. A portion of the central part of the material 16 is cut in a channel form when seen in the plan view for forming the recess 17. Metal films are then vacuum deposited on the front and back surfaces of the material 16 for forming electrodes 19, 20. By this method an ultrasonic conversion element 21 is completed. When using the element 21 as the piercing type probe, the element 21 is cut into strips to form a number of unit elements 22. The recess 17 as it is forms the piercing groove. However, since the unit elements 22' are left in a junction 18, there is no interrupted portion.
