PURPOSE:To produce a polymer having excellent particle shape and high stereo- regularity, in high catalytic activity, by using a novel supported catalyst prepared by dissolving a solid product derived from a halide and a bivalent metallic compound in an inert hydrocarbon solvent, solidifying the solution again and using the product as the carrier. CONSTITUTION:A trivalent metal halide is made to react with a bivalent metal hydroxide, oxide, carbonate, double salt containing the same, or hydrate of a bivalent metal compound. The obtained solid product and a titanic acid ester, an alcohol and if necessary, an organic acid ester are dissolved in an inert hydrocarbon solvent under heating and the obtained solution is mixed and reacted with a silicon halide and an organic acid ester to obtain a solid product. The product is made to react with halogenated Ti and/or V and the resultant solid product is used as a component of a supported solid catalyst for the polymerization of an alpha-olefin.
