PURPOSE:To facilitate starting of an ultraviolet treatment device, which includes an electrodeless lamp which receives microwaves to produce ultraviolet rays, and increase the efficiency of conversion into ultraviolet rays by installing a field generator for applying a magnetic field to the electrodeless lamp. CONSTITUTION:Microwaves from a magnetron 2 are supplied to an antenna 7 through a waveguide 1. An electrodeless lamp 9 which consists of an inner and an outer glass tube 10 and 11 forming a discharge space 12 which is charged with mercury and a rare gas such as argon, is installed around the antenna 7. After the lamp 9 is placed in a treatment chamber 19 in which water or similar substance is sterilized, an electromagnet 25 is placed surrounding the chamber 19, thereby constituting an ultraviolet treatment device. The electromagnet 25 is used to apply a magnetic field to the discharge space of the lamp 9 to induce cyclotron movement of electrons thereby facilitating starting of the device. Furthermore, it is possible to increase the efficiency of conversion into ultraviolet rays by increasing the absorption rate of microwaves.
