PURPOSE:To prevent deterioration in the characteristics of an optical fiber having a constituent element liable to generate hydrogen by forming a ceramic layer at a position at which the intrusion of hydrogen into the optical fiber can be prevented. CONSTITUTION:When an optical fiber 1 has a constituent element contg. a metal which generates hydrogen by a reaction with water or a component which generates hydrogen by irradiation, e.g., a coating layer or a tension member, a ceramic layer 2 having 0.1-30mum thickness is formed at a position at which the intrusion of hydrogen into the optical fiber 1 can be prevented, e.g., on the optical fiber 1. The intrusion of hydrogen into the optical fiber 1 can be prevented even when the fiber 1 is used in an environment where the fiber 1 may be exposed to radiation or at a place into which moisture penetrates, so the deterioration in the characteristics of the fiber 1 by the presence of hydrogen can be prevented.
