PURPOSE:To perform the same approximation between adjacent areas by information on the correspondence between extracted segments and areas sectioned by them and boundaries approximated, segment by segment, by extracting boundaries of areas as segments and generating said information on the correspondence. CONSTITUTION:A boundary extracting means 2 extracts a dot sequence positioned on a grating line of a digital grating between contour dot sequence where adjacent areas contact each other as a boundary dot sequence by segmen tation. A correspondence information generating means 3 generates extracted boundary data to which information on the correspondence between the extracted segments and areas sectioned by them is added. A boundary approxi mating means 4 approximates dot sequence segments of extracted boundary data 10 by a straight-line primitive and an arc primitive to generate image description data 12. Boundaries of respective areas are extracted, area by area, so each segment is extracted twice, but a segment number is added to area data for a segment which is already registered.
