PURPOSE:To obtain an organic solvent-soluble polyester resin having a high glass transition point, by reacting a dicarboxylic acid dihalide with a biphenyl in an organic solvent. CONSTITUTION:A dicarboxylic acid dihalide of formula I is reacted with a bisphenol of the formula: HO-R-OH in a two-phase system of an organic solvent/ aqueous alkali solution or in an organic solvent to obtain a polyester resin of formula II. When using one kind of Ar, it is a bivalent tetraphenylthiophene group. When using two or more kinds of Ar, one of them is a bivalent tetraphenylthiophene group and the others are bivalent aromatic groups, X is a halogen, R is a bivalent aromatic group and n is 10-200. When n is smaller than 10 in the polyester resin of formula II, the properties, such as mechanical properties and heat resistance, of a molding such as film are not sufficient. When n is above 200, its solubility in an organic solvent decreases.
