NEW MATERIAL:Prosurugatoxin (=des-xylopyranosyl-neosurugatoxin) of formula. USE:It is a novel toxin causing the poisoning by Babylonia japonica (a kind of clam) and having lower polarity than neosurugatoxin. It specifically inhibits the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor of brain, and can be used as a reagent suitable for the investigation of the neurotransmission mechanism and the action of brain, or as a medicinal drug such as ganglionic blocking agent. PREPARATION:The mesogaster gland of poisonous Babylonia japonica is homog enized in 1% acetic acid, left at 2 deg.C for 9 hr, and centrifuged. The supernatant liquid is added to 10 times volume of acetone, and the precipitate is removed again by centrifugal separation. The supernatant liquid is concentrated under reduced pressure, defatted with ether, eluted from a Sephadex G-25 gel-filtration column with 0.5% acetic acid under fractionation, and finally, the eluted material is subjected to high-performance liquid chromatography and the compound of formula eluted after neosurugatoxin is collected.
