PURPOSE:To search a tape stably even at the fast search time to yield various requests by unifying modes of identification signals, which are recorded with one head, to one specific mode including the identification signal required for fast search and recording interruptedly identification signals of many kinds of modes with the other head. CONSTITUTION:If an identification signal M7 is recorded by one head A out of two rotary heads A and B and optional modes Mx, My, etc. are recorded by the other head B, information on only tracks A1, A2 recorded by the head A are reproduced interruptedly but information on tracks recorded by the head B are not reproduced practically because of azimuth loss when the recorded tape is searched at a high speed. Thus, the probability that combinations of ID0-ID5 included in two adjacent bytes out of 6 bytes of the identification signal M7 in a reproduced signal of the head A, namely, blocks (a) and (b), blocks (c) and (d), and blocks (e) and (f) are reproduced correctly together on the same track is high.
