A roller for the pressure treatment of fabric webs comprises a roller casing 1 which encloses a rigid rotational axle 4 and has a covering 2 made of rubber or rubber-like plastics material. The casing 1 is designed with a doubly tapering inner peripheral surface and is supported against the axle 4 by two supporting rings 7 which taper in the same direction and are displaceable towards or away from one another in the axial direction to expand or contract the roller by means of adjusting spindles 8. The conical surfaces of the casing 1 or the rings 7 may be grooved to allow the flow of lubricant via channel 14.
