PURPOSE:To treat a liquid material biologically with low cost and high efficiency by coating solidified surface of previously cultured liquid suspension of microorganism with an org. polymer and allowing the immobilized microorganism obtd. by gelating the coated product to contact with untreated water. CONSTITUTION:Liquid suspension (a) of microorganism, namely, activated sludge slurry produced in a sewage disposal plant, etc. is admixed with an org. polymer flocculant (b) to obtain flocculated material, which is dehydrated to dehydrated cake (d) in a dehydrating stage 1. Obtd. dehydrated cake (d) is fed to a coating stage 3 where it is dipped in the soln. of an org. polymer resin (e) (e.g. sodium alginate, etc.) to obtain a product having coated surface of the dehydrated cake with the org. polymer resin (e), which is transformed to gel in a gelating stage 4. Obtd. immobilized microorganism (f) is allowed to contact with crude water to be treated in a biological treating device 5 under aerobic or anaerobic condition.
