A lifting jack for heavy loads, such as containers, rail vehicles or the like, with a horizontal jib (18) for supporting the load, which jib (18) is held within a vertically projecting machine housing (10) and is arranged on the latter in such a way as to be horizontally and vertically displaceable, has elastic cover sheets (23) closing the machine housing (10) above and below the jib (18), on at least one vertical side of the machine housing (10), and partly wound up on winding shafts (22), so that the inner space of the machine housing (10) is essentially completely closed and is open only in the area of the projecting jib (18) in every operating position of the jib. <IMAGE>
