In a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine with individual cylinder heads, fixed on the crank case and arranged in line or in banks, which have side faces machined transversely to the longitudinal direction of the internal combustion engine, the cylinder heads contribute virtually nothing to strengthening the engine against its longitudinal vibrations. According to the invention, the individual cylinder heads in a line are braced together by at least one anchor bolt which passes or pass through the cylinder heads in the engine's longitudinal direction. A considerable strengthening of the engine against longitudinal vibrations is thereby achieved. This has the additional advantage that all the cylinder heads can be lifted off as one piece after slackening the cylinder head bolts, which makes assembly and inspection of the valves or pistons easier.
