In a local area network having a plurality of stations which access a unidirectional ring in which each station which wishes to transmit initially listens in to the ring line to determine whether a transmission process is already taking place there and, if the ring line is busy, waits for access until it receives access authorization by means of a token, if the ring line is free, the station which wishes to transmit accesses the ring line, in competition with other stations, with the risk of collision, if it does not already have an information packet in the ring which has been transmitted earlier and has been terminated by a token. If a collision is detected, the transmission of the information packet is interrupted and a collision packet is transmitted; on reception of such a collision packet, the ring is closed again and the station which wishes to transmit does not start to listen in to the ring line again until a randomly determined waiting-time interval has elapsed, unless it has already recognised a token and gained access.
