The apparatus for automatically making tights has two clamps (1, 2) for clamping the two inner fabric layers, lying one on the other and forming the stocking part (6) of the tights, of two length (3) of tights which are pivotable through 180 DEG about an axis perpendicular to the clamping plane, a cutting device for cutting apart the fabric layers held by the clamps, a gusset dispenser for feeding a gusset part (11), and a gusset clamp (14) for clamping the gusset part in the intended position, which has two pairs of jaws which are movable relative to one another parallel to the plane of the fabric layers and between which can be clamped respectively a gusset edge and the edge of the two side parts of the stocking part (6), one pair of jaws being advancable relative to the other for the sewing together of a gusset edge and the edge of the corresponding side part, and a device for moving the tights' stocking part and gusset part (6, 11) retained by the clamps (1, 2) and the gusset clamp (14) towards the sewing head (19). <IMAGE>
