Process for generating energy in a combustion chamber of an oil-burning engine (esp. a diesel engine, jet engine, turbine or boiler) comprises introducing a synthetic fuel into the chamber and igniting the fuel, where the fuel comprises one or more esters of formula RO-CO-CnHaOx (I) in undistd. catalyst- and glycerol-free form or fractionally distd. glycerol-free form (where R is 1-12C alkyl, (1-4C alkoxy)ethyl or -propyl, cyclopentyl, cyclohexyl, hydroxyethyl or hydroxypropyl; n= 11 to 22; a= 2n+1, 2n-1, 2n-3, 2n-5 or 2n-7; x= 0 or 1). New fuel mixts comprise 6-99 (pref. 10-75) wt.% of one or more esters of formula (I) and 1-94 (pref. 25-90) wt.% of a middle distillate fuel. (I) and mixts. of (I) with diesel oil give better fuel economy than diesel oil alone. |
