PURPOSE:To prevent reduction in resolution in the main scanning direction by using a comparator so as to compare a prescribed threshold value with a gradation value of an intermediate gradation picture signal, recording one lines content of data to a recording medium with a recording section, changing the threshold value and applying prescribed number of times of recordings in the subscanning direction similarly. CONSTITUTION:An analog signal including an intermediate gradation picture signal is inputted from an input terminal 1 and a demodulation section 3 extracts the intermediate gradation signal from the analog signal. Then a sam pling section 5 applies sampling in response to the number of recording picture elements in the main scanning direction and the result is outputted from the sampling section 5. Then an A/D converting section obtains the n-gradation number (in this case, n=16-intermediate picture signal is sampled) of each pic ture element and records the result to a picture signal memory 9. The recording of one line in the main scanning direction is executed by n-times subscannings and it is controlled that the total of the n-times subscanning widths is to be below the actual subscanning width 31.
