PURPOSE:To constitute an extremely compact and thin pattern sensor even when an object which is a flexible pattern is something large like the palm of the hand by diffracting light incident form a hologram side by a hologram and reflecting the light totally by the interface between a glass substrate and air. CONSTITUTION:When the relations of the incident light 3 on interfaces between an air layer 6a and protection glass 9, the protection glass 9 and a hologram diffraction grating 8, and the hologram diffraction grating 8 and glass substrate 7 are specified, the incident light incident from the protection glass 9 is reflected totally by the interface between the glass substrate 7 and air layer 6 even when the angle of incidence is <=90 deg.C. Consequently, a fingerprint, or palm of the hand, etc., is placed opposite the interface between the glass substrate 7 and air layer 6b and the light 3 is made incident, so that the flexible pattern is detected.
