<p>Method and apparatus for producing syntactic materials comprising a matrix material having a quantity of microspheres dispersed therein, whereby microspheres of incompressible material may be utilised. Liquid components which react to form the matrix material are mixed in first mixing means (122), and the uncured matrix material is mixed with microspheres in a predetermined ratio in a second mixing means of a type which will not damage the microspheres, such as a rotating pin mixer, a static screw mixer or a static turbulence mixer. The syntactic material so produced is suitable for use in coating pipelines or the like, and for other purposes. Also disclosed is a method of improving the impact resistance of a coated pipe, by incorporating a wrapped strip of glass fibre fabric into the coating material.</p> |
