PURPOSE:To decrease the quantity of data information so as to simplify a judgement process by recognizing a pattern on the basis of the color data of the pattern obtained by scanning, in a pattern recognizing unit for a label or the like. CONSTITUTION:The pattern of the label of an object 1 to be measured is scanned one dimensionally by means of a color sensor 2, and the color data of predetermined color lights G and R are outputted. The color data G and R are respectively inputted to comparing circuits 6G and 6R through integral circuits 3G, 3R, A/D converters 4G and 4R, and are compared with reference data previously stored in a memory 5. Reference data corresponding to the pattern to be recognized are searched by means of a judging circuit 7 to get its pattern recognized. Therefore, the quantity of the data from the sensor can be decreased, and the judging process of the data can be simplified, and the period of time required for recognizing the pattern can be greatly decresased.
