PURPOSE:To reduce the residual fluorine content in uranium oxide, and to impart high activity to the oxide, by carrying out the dry conversion of uranium hexafluoride to uranium oxide powder suitable as a nuclear reactor fuel preventing the contact of UF6 gas with hydrogen gas. CONSTITUTION:UF6 or a mixture of UF6 and a carrier gas is introduced together with steam into the first reaction zone at a molar flow ratio (steam/ UF6) of >2 to effect the hydrolysis of UF6 to UO2F2. The obtained UO2F2 is mixed with a hydrogen-containing gas, and the mixture is further mixed with an oxygen-containing gas and introduced into the second reaction zone. The combustion of the hydrogen-containing gas and the oxygen-containing gas takes place in the second reaction zone, and UO2F2 is converted to a composition rich in uranium oxide in the presence of the generated active flame.
