NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by the formula I [R and R' are 1-9C n-alkyl; cyclohexane ring is in trans(equatorial-equatorial) configuration]. EXAMPLE:A compound shown by the formula IV. USE:An electro-optical display material useful as a dynamic light scattering-type display cell material or an electric field effect-type display cell material. A nematic liquid crystal compound having weakly positive dielectric constant anisotropy capable of providing a practical mixed liquid crystal material having high refractive index anisotropy (DELTAn) and high N-I transition temperature by blending it with any of various liquid crystal of parent material. PREPARATION:A 4-n-alkylphenylacetylene shown by the formula II is reacted with a compound shown by the formula V in a solvent in the presence of bis(triphenylphosphine)palladium (II) chloride, CuI2, and diethylamine to give a compound shown by the formula III, which is reacted with a compound shown by the formula VI in a solvent in the presence of a tertiary amine under heating and reflux, to give a compound shown by the formula I.
