PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material and synthetic intermediate for 1-deoxymuramylpeptide useful as medicinal drugs, immunizing agents, etc., easily in high yield, by reacting a D-glucitol derivative with an L-2-halo-propionic acid. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula III can be produced by (1) reacting 2-acylamino-1,5-anhydro-2-deoxy-4,6-O-isopropylidene-D-glucitol of formula I (R is acyl) with L- (or D- or DL-)2-halo-propionic acid of formula II (X is halogen) in a solvent such as dioxane at 40-95 deg.C for 0.5-3hr, (2) adjusting the pH of the reaction mixture to 7-9 with an acid such as dilute hydrochloric acid, (3) concentrating in vacuum at <=60 deg.C, (4) extracting with a solvent and (5) drying and purifying the extract.
