PURPOSE:To increase head output and to improve S/N by making plural notches in the overlapped part of a ferromagnetic substrate and a ferromagnetic thin film, and making current to flow only in an area of good sensitivity characteristic. CONSTITUTION:Plural notched parts 14 are made in the direction of width at nearly right angles to the direction of flow of current in overlapped parts 15, 16 of a ferromagnetic substrate 10 and a ferromagnetic thin film 19 of an MR element 13. Accordingly, current flows only in the area width omega' high in sensitivity characteristic to signal magnetic flux. Consequently, when current I is made constant, current density J becomes omega/omega' times, and at the same time, an average value of resistivity variation to signal magnetic flux of the MR element 13 increases, and head output increases. At this time, as power consumption W is not changed as W=I<2>.R (where R is DC resistance), thermal noise does not increase. When current density J is made constant, current becomes omega'/omega, and power consumption W becomes (omega'/omega)<2>. Thus, though head output does not increase, thermal noise is lowered remarkably. |
