PURPOSE:To realize an optical character reading method which can delete the number of correction characters in a bundle and to read alternative characters, by using plural lines as correction signals without entering correction symbol in one character unit for correction. CONSTITUTION:First, the contour of a pattern is detected. And the pattern contour as shown in Fig. (a) which includes character patterns C2-C6 together with correction letters C3, C4, C5 is detected as outer contour pattern CO2-CO6, CO35 and inner contour pattern C14 and Ci351-Ci354 as shown in Fig. (b). Next, it is decided that there is any candidates for correction within the outer contour, and the contour which is decided to be a candidate for correction is invalidated together with the inner contour included in the contour concerned. In such a way, the contour of a corrected character is excluded from the object to be read. Next, for the remaining pattern CO2-CO6 and Ci4 after excluding the corrected characters, patterns corresponding to the character frame is selected.
