928,539. Storing liquefied gases. NORTH THAMES GAS BOARD, and A.P.V. CO. Ltd. Jan. 19, 1962 [Jan. 20, 1961], No. 2407/61. Addition to 851,568. Class 8(2). In preventing compaction of powdered heat insulating material between inner and outer shells 4, 1, Fig. 1, of a liquefied gas e.g. methane container by surrounding the inner shell 4 by a wall 7 so as to provide an air space therebetween and a powdered heat insulation space between the wall 7 and the outer shell 1 and wherein the wall 7 comprises a series of panels 12, Fig. 3, capable of expanding and contracting relative to each other in a peripheral direction, the panels 12, have vertical corrugations and are rigidly and sealingly connected together along adjacent vertical edges and are connected by spaced ties 8 to the outer shell 1 and are supported by peripherally extending discontinuous bracing members 16a connected to the outer shell 1 thereby allowing free thermal expansion of said members. Adjacent vertical edges of corrugated sheets 12 are bolted to flanges 16 of vertical T-shaped stanchions 13 having holes 14 through which pass ties 8. Welded to inner face of each stanchion 13 are two channel-shaped brackets 17 into which slide the ends of similarly shaped members 16a. In a modification the stanchions are dispensed with, tie brackets 18, Fig. 6, are welded to alternate crests of the plates 12 and brackets 20 welded to adjacent trough positions serve to support lengths of tubing 21 telescopically connected together by smaller diameter tubes 22 supported by brackets 23. The outer shell 1 is of steel whilst the inner shell 4 and intermediate wall 7 are of aluminium alloy. Access is gained through manholes 10, 11 in conical cover plates 3, 6. |
