Process and apparatus for the more effective harvesting of cereal crops by combine harvesters, the essence of the process being that, in the first place, only the ears together with a very short stalk segment are cut off and are conveyed further into the interior of the combine harvester, and, in a further cycle, the stalks left behind in the vicinity of the ground are cut off and are deposited on the stubble field at the latest in front of the rear running wheels of the combine harvester. According to the invention, the apparatus is designed as a ground-following mounted appliance (8) which is arranged on the combine harvester behind the cutting unit of the latter and which is provided with rotating or alternating cutter bodies arranged in front of the front running wheels of the combine harvester. <IMAGE>
