In the case of the currently known snow chains clamping of the latter on both sides is necessary; this kind of snow chain must only be driven on snow-covered carriageways and has to be taken off in the case of snow-free roads. In the case of the vulcanised snow chain steel chains are no longer required; this snow chain is composed of rubber segments which possess good road-holding characteristics, have lateral overlaps and - when vulcanised together on the tyre - result in a compact snow chain which guarantees good operation even on ice and roads covered with packed snow.
