Apparatus for purifying gases, such as exhaust gases of industrial plants, comprises one or more filters 6, 7 which move transversely to the gas stream and pass electrostatically charged, gas-permeable members 2, 3, 4, 5 so as to be electrostatically charged by them. The filters, of textile, glass or synthetic fibre material formed into endless belts 6, 7, are driven by motors 32, 33 so that they pass through a filter chamber 1 where they touch or pass closely to electrostatically charged plate-like members 2, 3, 4, 5 of metal, or non- metallic material having a metallized surface or containing metallic parts. The filters also pass into cleansing chambers 8, 9 where they are subjected to neutralizing apparatus 14, 15, 16, 17 before being stripped of dust particles by brushing, washing or suction heads 18, 19, 20, 21 as shown ; the action of the suction heads may be supplemented or replaced by air or steam blowing arrangements. When two or more filter belts are employed these may be made of different materials. The belts may be tensioned by adjusting rollers 12, 13 and the speed of each belt automatically regulated depending on the flow resistance sensed by manometers 30, 31. Ozone or ultra-violet radiation producers 34, 35 may also be provided for the oxidation of certain poison-gases or the destruction of micro-organisms and it is also possible to incorporate radioactive preparations. Instead of the neutralizing apparatus, an attachment to effect scraping of the filter surface may be employed. In a modification, each filter belt is directed by guide rollers so as to slide along opposite surfaces of a single electrostatically charged member. |
